Incorporated in 1912, Shaker Heights got its name from its elevation (1,050 feet above sea level) and the former owners of the land on which the community was formed. The North Union Community of the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing who were also known as ‘Shakers’ were the previous landowners and the city is named after them. In its first census taken in 1920, Shaker Heights was home to 1,616 people. Due to its growth as a streetcar suburb, 100 years later Shaker Heights now has a population of 27,027 people. It’s 9 miles east of Cleveland, and 22 minutes by car away from the city. Shaker Heights is part of Cuyahoga County and covers an area of 6.33 square miles. It is the hometown of NBA player and Charlotte Hornets guard Terry Rozier.
