In the southeast corner of Cuyahoga County rests Solon, Ohio. Solon (pronounced Soh-linn, or rhymes with colon) is a suburb of Cleveland and sits 21 miles southeast of the city. By car, you can travel from Solon to Cleveland in 25 minutes. It covers an area of 20.48 square miles and is home to 22,779 people. It was named after Lorenzo Solon Bull, who was the son of one of the first settlers. They chose his middle name because of its association with Solon, the Ancient Greek lawmaker who was dubbed the “father of democracy.”

Solon offers a sparse suburban feel, and 83% of residents own their own homes. Those homes have a median value of $286,200, which checks in at nearly $70,000 more than the national average. The hallmark of Solon is the school system. The schools are consistently ranked in the top 10 in the state of Ohio, and the schools have earned Red Quill awards, and been recognized through the National Blue Ribbon School program several times over the last few decades. ranked Solon’s school district the best in the United States in 2017.

The school systems aren’t the only good thing about Solon. There are several beautiful parks and a great recreation facility for children to use to play sports, use playground equipment or swim. The crime rate is also low in Solon, 57% lower than the state average to be exact.

For adults, there’s much work to be had, as there are a number of large companies (Swagelok, Nestle, the Cleveland Clinic) either headquartered in Solon or with offices there. For fun, Solon has the Grantwood Golf Course in the southeastern corner of the city, and several highly rated bars and restaurants.
